Millbay scoops double shortlisting in regional property awards

Millbay’s ongoing transformation into an exciting new waterfront destination for Plymouth has been recognised with a double shortlisting in the Insider South West Property Awards.

The game-changing mixed-use regeneration scheme in the heart of the UK’s ocean city has been shortlisted in the Development of the Year and Sustainable Project of the Year categories.

These latest nominations are the latest in a long line of regional and national accolades for the project, which is breathing new life into the former docks site and repurposing the land in a sustainable way, to create a vibrant and welcoming harbourside community.

Millbay is being delivered by The English Cities Fund — a strategic joint venture between national urban regenerator, Muse Developments, Legal and General, and Homes England – in partnership with Plymouth City Council.

With over £120 million of a planned £250 million invested in the area already, the new coastal quarter for Plymouth is delivering an innovative mix of residential, leisure, business, hotel, leisure and retail development, with high-quality public spaces and direct access to the waterfront.

Duncan Cumberland, residential development director for The English Cities Fund, said: “From the outset, we’ve looked to set a high standard for Millbay, in terms of its distinctive design, the quality of the homes we’re delivering and the community infrastructure,  which is enabling the area to thrive once more. It’s really pleasing to be recognised regionally for the exciting work which is happening here and the contribution Millbay is making towards the wider ambitions of Plymouth as an internationally significant waterfront destination, while driving inward investment and social prosperity at a time when it’s needed most.”

The fund has taken a phased approach to delivering Millbay, as a long-term regeneration partner for Plymouth. To date, the development has delivered over 550 new homes, 43,000 sq ft of business and retail space, improved infrastructure and refurbished listed docksides, new public realm, a 1,000- pupil school, the 171-berth King Point Marina and Dock Restaurant, with 400 more homes, a 126 bed hotel, 80-home extra care facility and more commercial space to follow in the next five years.

The latest phase, Quadrant Wharf, has seen new residents move into a mix of stunning one, two and three-bedroom apartments and split-level homes.

The fund’s multi-million refurbishment of Millbay’s inner harbour and listed quay walls has also helped position Plymouth as an internationally acclaimed sailing venue, with Millbay the location for the race village for the Americas Cup World Series in 2011 and set to play a key role in one of the world’s most spectacular international sailing events next year, when SailGP visits the city in 2021 following events in San Francisco and New York.

Winners are due to be announced at a rescheduled awards event due to take place on Thursday 18 March, 2021, at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol.
