First residents move into Millbay’s £30 million latest phase of development

Quadrant Wharf – the £30 million latest phase in the transformation of Millbay – has marked a major milestone with the first residents moving into their stunning new homes.

The 137-home development continues the award-winning transformation of Millbay’s former docks by The English Cities Fund – a strategic joint venture between urban regeneration innovators, Muse Developments, Legal & General and Homes England – into a new coastal quarter for Plymouth.

Among the first to move into her new home in Quadrant Wharf was Plymothian Tracy Barnes, moving back to the city after seven years living in the Tamar Valley.

“When I decided to come home, I thought long and hard about where to live back in Plymouth,” said Tracy.

“This whole area has been completely transformed and it was a really easy decision to come here to Quadrant Wharf and Millbay.”

Tracy is already enjoying settling into her two-bed, split-level home, which she shares with her teenage son.

“The finish here is brilliant. Everything works, I have no maintenance, I have a view, somebody else does the gardening. I just have to enjoy it. And being near the water is just fabulous. I’m really happy.”

Quadrant Wharf continues regeneration on the eastern side of the historic former Millbay docks and follows the multi-award-winning Quadrant Quay scheme.

It features a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, laid out in two blocks and a row of split-level homes. The scheme will also continue the new waterside promenade and Quadrant Quay’s coastal-themed, landscaped garden rooms.

As part of Millbay’s aim to open up the historic waterfront and reconnect the area with the city, a further new pedestrian link is being created from West Hoe Road down to the quayside.

Duncan Cumberland, residential development director for The English Cities Fund, said: “We’re really pleased to see the first residents moving into Quadrant Wharf and look forward to seeing this latest phase of development fully completed in the first half of the year.

“Our regeneration at Millbay continues to evolve as we move forward with the scheme. However, what has always been clear from the beginning is to create a distinctive, high-quality destination that blends together a real mix of uses, amenities and homes to suit both first-time, and mature buyers, to deliver what we feel is fast becoming a vibrant and diverse community here.

“This, coupled with the work Plymouth City Council is working on to complete the boulevard linking this this emerging new waterside quarter to the city centre, will further cement Millbay as a key catalyst in the wider transformation of the city.”

The wider Millbay regeneration project is an exciting mix of residential, leisure, business and retail development, with high quality public spaces and direct access to the waterfront.

Considerable progress has already been made in delivering the Millbay vision, with over £90 million of a planned £200 million invested in the area and the first phase of the boulevard – Isambard Brunel Way – already laid out. Millbay now has more than 400 new homes, new businesses, the new 1,000-pupil Plymouth School of Creative Arts, the 171-berth King Point Marina and the successful Dock Restaurant, all contributing to an increasingly busy and vibrant local community.

In addition to Quadrant Wharf, work is also currently under way on the new Mayflower Court scheme, being built by the Abbeyfield Society, which will provide supported living and extra care for 80 residents and shared spaces for community use. And planning approval has been given for the next exciting phase of development – 58 apartments, a 126-bedroom hotel and ground floor retail/leisure space at the gateway to the new Millbay boulevard and overlooking the inner harbour.
